Artist Statement

The aim of my work is to explore and bring light to forgotten and under-represented histories. This concept partnered with the fact that it is largely digital also plays into the idea that this work is archival, a feeling that I want to be felt by the audience. These artefacts are archived, and the accounts that I have attached to them exist in an ever-growing digital time capsule.

My practice is predominantly digital with a focus on filmmaking, often accompanied with a sculptural element to reinforce my concepts and act as a tool to guide the viewer. This flexibility enables my work to exist on multiple platforms, both digitally and physically, in turn making it more accessible. This medium is advantageous to my practice as it allows for an impactful, informative, comprehensive and malleable work of art, these are all features that couple favourably with the concepts I am interested in.

The most significant processes within my practice are; research, this refers not only to factual research of the places and ideas that I might be exploring, but also the personal research of how these subjects impact myself and those relevant to each project. Editing, the editing of my work (specifically moving image work) is crucial as this is the step which conceptualises the footage in an engaging way to convey what I am communicating. I consider my process to be continuously ongoing, as my subject matter is always one that is endless, this is a vital element of my process as it allows me to both adapt to the ever changing landscape of my subject matter, as well as acknowledging that it isn’t limited by time or space, my never-ending process mirrors that infinite nature of the concepts i explore.

The themes that my work considers include; historical and archival exploration, psychogeography, subscendance, and accessibility.

My work is directly influenced by my life and experiences. I will always make work about topics that affect me as a person, however I am not the focal point of any of my work as I make sure to tackle these topics in a way that can be universally understood. Another influence on my work is the idea of  geographic commonality, similarly to psychogeography in that places have a greater societal effect, I am also interested in the idea of community and how a sense of belonging to a place can be socially, physically, economically, and personally impactful.

The common themes throughout my entire practice that ties all my individual works together are, materially, the combination of film and sculptural in an amalgamation to create an immersive moving image experience, and conceptually, my work is always connect to myself personally, and every piece I make has an informative facet.

Some artists that heavily inspire my work include; Patrick Keiller. I take a lot of structural inspiration from his films. I enjoy the documentary style and easy going narrational format. I am also inspired by Zia Anger’s “My First Film” and by Tabita Rezaire’s works. Their use of the internet to distribute their work informs my practice and inspires my use of the internet and websites. As well as being inspired by Lara Grace Ford’s work and her use of spatial narratives, fiction and memory.
